SU Scotland has administered and promoted the Schools Prayer Network in Scotland since 2006 with the unchanged aim of supporting and encouraging people who pray for their local school. Around 1100 Scottish schools are currently being covered in prayer, out of a total of approximately 2700 schools. The number of schools registered has trebled in the last eighteen months, and there is a real buzz about schools prayer with many people emailing to say they wish to be linked up with others who are praying, asking if their school is registered, and reporting back answers to prayer. SU schools workers are highlighting the need for schools prayer in their local areas, and there are instances of schools which have been “closed” to Christian input suddenly inviting SU staff to lead assemblies and wishing a Christian group for their pupils!
There are three main events in the Scottish Schools Prayer Network diary – Strictly Come Praying, Back to School with God Sunday, and European Pray Day. Strictly Come Praying is a youth prayer event aimed at 11-18 year olds and is held in two separate locations in March. The day includes worship, Bible teaching, workshops, interactive prayer stations and group prayer times; the Central Scotland event is already booked out with 400 young people and their leaders all eagerly wanting to come! At the end of the summer, materials including an all-age talk, children’s activities, sketch, powerpoint slides and bookmark are produced for Back to School with God Sunday, which is an opportunity for the local church to pray for their school staff and young people as they return to school after the summer break. Finally, in November SPN Scotland groups are encouraged to join in the European Pray Day for Schools by accessing the downloadable prayer posters, fliers and prayer aids.
