Prayer Days in Somerset
Christians from churches in our part of Somerset took time out to pray for their local schools during November on three special ‘Pray for Schools’ Prayer Days in Watchet, Wellington and Wiveliscombe.
Church buildings in the 3 towns were open from 9am until 9pm, set up with ‘prayer stations’ that helped inform and inspire those who visited, to pray for schools and education, locally and nationally. There were also plenty of creative materials on hand so that prayers could be expressed in a variety of ways.
People of all ages and from various denominations came and went throughout the day keeping a continuous watch of prayer for the school communities in this part of Somerset.
We wrote to all the schools locally to tell them we would be praying for them and had some very positive feedback. In Wellington three groups of pupils from St John’s Primary School visited the prayer day with their teachers, and spent time drawing pictures of their school and making pipe cleaner people as they prayed for their school and the people there.
It seems to me that this is a very good way of showing local schools that we care and is something that most people, if not everyone in our churches can get involved in. So whilst ministers, youth workers and volunteers from local churches may well be regularly involved in the life of their local school in practical ways; many more members of the churches are able to be a part of supporting local schools as we lift them to God in prayer.
Thanks for the inspiration from the ‘Pray for Schools’ initiative – we hope to repeat and build on these events in 2010.
